Series 9 So Far…

Episode titles and synopses

The Magician’s Apprentice: The first confirmed episode title of series 9 is The Magician’s Apprentice. Tenerife, perhaps doubling for an alien landscape, is where the production team headed to film parts of this episode (and episode 2).

The Witch’s Familiar: will be the second half of the two-parter starting with The Magician’s Apprentice, written by Steven Moffat and directed by Hettie Macdonald (Blink).

Missy will make her return with Moffat teasing, “She’s straight back to plague the Doctor and Clara, but what brings her back into their lives is the last thing they’d expect.” Jemma Redgrave also reprises her role as UNIT’s Kate Stewart. Parts of the opener will take place on an alien planet and parts on contemporary Earth. Clara is still at Coal Hill. Capaldi said his Doctor will evolve and that he’ll “probably be different again… There are more mysteries about him … There are other things in my Doctor that we’re still to display.” Shot in the second filming block with early filming taking place in Spain.

Untitled 2-Parter

The Girl Who Died: is a period adventure written by Jamie Mathieson (Mummy On The Orient ExpressFlatline)

The first of two consecutive period stories. Maisie Williams lead the guest cast with Moffat teasing, “It’s not possible to say too much about who or what she’s playing, but she is going to challenge the Doctor in very unexpected ways. This time he might just be out of his depth, and we know Maisie is going to give him exactly the right sort of hell.”

The Woman Who Lived: comes from Torchwood writer Catherine Treganna.

We also know that there’s a two-parter in series nine, that’s been written by Being Human‘s Toby Whithouse (School ReunionThe Vampires Of VeniceThe God ComplexA Town Called Mercy).

The second of two consecutive period stories. It is currently unclear if they are narratively linked.

The rest are untitled.

Moffat teased that the penultimate episode of the run will end with a massive cliffhanger and one he doesn’t think fans will see coming.

While we don’t have an official premiere date yet, it has been confirmed that Doctor Who will return in Autumn 2015.
