The Tease Continues

Doctor Who: Viewers “will have to watch the Christmas episode” to see if Jenna Coleman is staying

It looks like Doctor Who companion Jenna Coleman might be coming back for series 9, despite earlier reports of her imminent departure – but the BBC is remaining tight-lipped.

“This is speculation so we won’t be commenting,” a BBC spokesperson told  “Viewers will have to watch the Christmas episode to find out!”

The news broken by the Mirror earlier this morning suggests that Coleman had intended to leave during this year’s Christmas special, but later decided to continue alongside current Doctor Peter Capaldi causing a rewrite of the script.

“In the original draft of the script, she became an old woman who then died with the Doctor at her side,” a source said. “But after they were rewritten, she will now be seen returning to the Tardis, hand in hand with the Doctor.”

Rumours of Coleman’s departure have been circling for months, with the actress herself doing nothing to quell speculation.

“I’ve just been keeping my mouth firmly shut,” the 28-year-old told earlier this month.

“You get good at keeping secrets – this one in particular is quite difficult because you don’t want to be evasive, and you want to answer questions, but at the same time I just look back at different points of the show, where we had things like Oswin [her first appearance] in Asylum of the Daleks, when people didn’t know, and it was just better.”

She added: “The show is better for the surprises. So that’s why we’re being very evasive. Very coy.”

However, she did admit that reports of her departure “could be misinformation”, which head writer Steven Moffat has admitted to for storylines in the past.
