The Saga Continues
We’ve had so much back-and-forth over whether Doctor Who companion Jenna Coleman is leaving the series that we’re getting emotional whiplash… So has she now decided to stay on in her role as Clara Oswald?
According to the Mirror, Coleman changed her mind about leaving after the upcoming Christmas special, and will now appear in the first half of series nine (to be broadcast next autumn) alongside current Doctor Peter Capaldi.
The newspaper’s source says Jenna had a “change of heart”, which delighted showrunner Steven Moffat but required rewriting the Christmas special (which unites the Doctor and Clara with Nick Frost’s Santa Claus while terrifying creatures attack an Arctic base).
“When it came to Clara, they had to tear them up and start again,” the source said.
“In the original draft of the script, she became an old woman who then died with the Doctor at her side. But after they were rewritten, she will now be seen returning to the Tardis, hand in hand with the Doctor.”
The saga of Coleman’s rumoured departure has been going on for several months, with the actress refusing to confirm or deny her future involvement.
Speaking to RadioTimes.com, the actress explained that her non-committal answers were an attempt to keep the mystique of the series.
“You get good at keeping secrets – this one in particular is quite difficult because you don’t want to be evasive, and you want to answer questions, but at the same time I just look back at different points of the show, where we had things like Oswin [her first appearance] in Asylum of the Daleks, when people didn’t know, and it was just better.”
“The show is better for the surprises. So that’s why we’re being very evasive. Very coy.”
So will this be Clara’s last Christmas? We’ll have more on the story as it develops.
