Dalek Risk

I got to try out my Dalek Risk this past weekend. There were 5 of us.
It plays a lot like standard Risk with a few interesting twists.
First up is the TARDIS square. Every round you put the top card from the Territory Deck in the square and place the little TARDIS that comes with the game on that country.
That country is out of play for that turn. It can’t be attacked. It can’t attack. It can’t defend.
At the end of this particular game it kept the game going for one more turn because the last person about to be wiped out had the TARDIS in one of their remaining countries.
Then  comes the Mission Cards. You get 2 at the beginning of the game. They have “missions” to complete to get extra Daleks. The missions are to conquer specific countries that have a Doctor Who Villain on them, like Salamander in Western Australia. Take that country with the Mission Card and you get extra Daleks.
More interesting were the Power Cards. You get 3 of these at the beginning of the game.
You can’t look at them before you play them!
When you are at the “place your Daleks” (Army) phase you can announce you are playing one. They are supposed to be around 50% good and 50% Bad for you but we found them to be largely bad in the game.
One player decided to play all 3 of his in a row, early in the game. He only got 3 armies in each of these turns mind you.
He got “lose 3 Daleks from any territory” Twice! and “lose 2” on the other. So we started joking that all his Daleks were blowing up on the assembly line! 🙂
I didn’t fair much better. While I started out ok, I left my Brazillian flank open and I was wiped out fairly quickly.
The Doctor is involved in the game to a very much lesser degree I though during this game. You have a Clara marker that starts on Hartnell and moves down the scale of regenerations until it reaches The Eleventh. If it does the games over and everyone loses because the Doctor has defeated the Daleks.
But you have roll dice on selected Doctors to see if the regeneration happens so the game is not necessarily over in 11 turns.
It only made it to Peter Davison, though on hindsight I’m not sure we actually paid much attention to it in the later part of the game.
You get 5 Dalek armies, made up equally of Classic pepperpots and “New Paradigm” Daleks.
The onlyreal negative was in the Daleks themselves.
You have tiny Daleks that were 1 Dalek each.
Medium sized that we 5
and Large Daleks that were 10.
But some trouble was had distinguishing sometimes between the small and medium Daleks.
Overall it was fun game.  I think it’s a very fun version of the Classic game.
Even the Risk-hater who was observing had nice things to say about it.
So if you can afford to buy it from the UK, I think would be well worth it!
