Variations on a Theme

Imagine, it’s November 23, 1963.

Your TV looks like this.

1963 TV

It’s Black and White.

And suddenly you hear:

The first electronically composed TV Score in British Television history.

Composed by Ron Grainer, Delia Derbyshire and the BBC Radiophonic workshop.

The Theme to Doctor Who is nearly as iconic as the show.

Even though it has changed, it’s basic essence hasn’t changed in 50 years.

Just variations on a theme. A Happy sound, always.

And I think Delia Derbyshire is largely unappreciated for her genius, for she is the one who came up with the electronic sounds and made the theme what it really is today, a legendary piece of genius.

And that was not all…

And on the back of that, the Internet is a strange place, as Fans have also taken the Opening Credits and stylized it interesting ways. This seems to have been a bigger fad during the Tennant years than lately but I kind of split the examples a bit more.

But by far the sickest, and best one I have seen so far:

Now that’s passion.

That’s fandom.

And it’s due to Ron Grainer, The Composer.

But mostly, it’s due to One Genius, Delia Derbyshire, 50 years ago.
